What is the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom on a camera?

Optical zoom uses only the zoom lens to increase the image size while digital zoom "digitally" magnifies the image to increase the image size. Digital zoom will always produce photos which are "fuzzier" than optical zoom, assuming the same amount of optical and zoom was used. This is because the digitally zoomed photo is simply the image at maximum optical zoom but expanded to look a smaller portion of the maximum optically zoomed image. So you don't get any extra detail in the digitally zoomed image because this image is just looking at a smaller section of the full optical image. In most cases, you only want to use optical zoom since it allows you to produce the largest image without digital artifacts which can be captured by your image sensor. Digital zoom can still be handy when you want a close up of a subject and you are certain you won't be printing a large 8x10" photo but only a 4x6" photo. Hope this helps.
