Windows 7 upgrades can do a migration from Vista forward without a hitch.
XP and older must undergo a "Wipe and load" configuration. Upgrades require you to install the disk in the Windows environment. Windows 7 PE (pre-installation environment) gives you software called "easy migration tool" that helps you backup your login accounts, favorites, critical settings regarding firewall and a number of other stuff.
Upgrades: Windows 7 will only upgrade to w 7 64 bit if you previously had xp 64bit or vista 64 bit. If you insist having 64bit but do not currently have a windows 64 on board - you cannot buy just the upgrade. You need full version $$$$$$.
The important thing to note for XP users: remember, your hard drive will be wiped out completely. Be sure to have your original XP or Vista discs - burn them if necessary before proceeding. Be sure to google windows 7 upgrade advisor to run tests before purchasing. W 7 has a feature called AERO that is very demanding regarding your video card. I went from windows xp media edition 32 bit to windows 7 ultimate 32 bit. I will never go back to XP knowing that my 2006 AMD athlon x2 generation runs windows 7 way more efficiently than xp ever did.
